What does Neurodiverse mean?
Neurodiversity is the idea that there is no one "right" way for a brain to work. People naturally think, learn, communicate, process information, and experience the world in different ways. Neurodiversity includes autistic people, people with ADHD, dyslexia, sensory processing differences, and many other ways of being.
Being neurodivergent is not something that needs to be fixed. It is a natural variation of human experience. At the same time, living in a world that is often designed for neurotypical people can create challenges that impact daily life.

Neurodivergent individuals may experience differences in sensory processing, attention, communication, emotional regulation, executive functioning, motor skills, social interaction, learning, and energy levels. These differences can affect participation at home, school, work, and in the community. They can also influence relationships, self-esteem, and overall well-being.

Every neurodivergent person is unique. The same characteristics that create challenges in one situation may also bring incredible strengths in another. Creativity, deep interests, strong problem-solving abilities, honesty, passion, empathy, innovation, and unique perspectives are just a few of the gifts that many neurodivergent individuals bring to the world.
At Smoky Mountain Occupational Therapy, we believe that understanding how a person's brain works is the foundation for growth, confidence, and connection. Rather than focusing on changing who someone is, we help individuals and families discover supports, strategies, and environments that allow them to thrive while honoring their authentic selves.
